Community Service
Students at the Turning Point Academy (TPA) are not only making positive choices for themselves. They are making choices for the global community. TPA students are rewarded for their positive choices with a donation to their favorite charity. Students research the different causes that they feel strongly about and at the end of the school year TPA makes a contribution in their honor. It is important for TPA students to understand that their positive choices reward their community and ultimately has a positive impact globally.
2008-2009 school year contributions:
TPA Students:
Michael, age 10, chose the Changing Minds Foundation because he wants to help children with Down syndrome.
Ciara, age 12, chose The Make-a-Wish Foundation which gives children with life threatening diseases a wish. She believes that these wishes change their lives forever and if you can give them that one wish you may strengthen, empower, and help that child more than you would ever think. Ciara will have her Bat Mitzvah this summer and will also give 18% of her gifts to Lev La Lev, a Jewish orphanage located in Israel for young women up to 18 years old who have been abandoned by their parents, abused, and /or neglected. This fund helps these girls to have a Bat’ Mitzvah, clothing, an education, birthday parties, food, field trips, dental care, and much more. There are about 1 hundred and sixty girls there who need to just be children. Wouldn’t it be sad to not have a birthday at the age of 5? Some of the most treasured moments of a childhood may not ever be available to them to even experience. These girls need our help.
Sarah, age 16, Mercy Ministries.
Hayley, age 17, chose the organization Invisible Children. Hayley has been involved with this organization ever since she helped her friend throw a benefit concert where the money went to aid these children in Uganda. Invisible Children was founded by three young filmmakers who witnessed the abuse and poverty of the children and families living in Uganda during the 20 year war. They released a documentary called Invisible Children: Rough Cut and opened the eyes of many Americans today. Invisible Children does many things to raise money for these invisible children, making them visible to the world. It is truly a great organization. www.invisiblechildren.com
Throughout the school year our students worked together with other NEW College Preparatory Academy students and contributed to several local charities:
BENEFITING THE PATIENTS OF JOHNS HOPKINS CHILDREN’S CENTER
Dear Friend, Welcome to the “Give a snuggly” blanket drive benefiting The Johns Hopkins children’s center. Johns Hopkins children’s Center, a 176 bed pediatric unit is the home to many children with many serious or life-threatening illnesses. Many of these children spend more time living at Hopkins than they do in their own home. Let us help in making these children as comfortable as possible while they undergo their treatments and through their recovery. Thank you so much for your generosity and support!!!!
Thanks again, Jennifer Lehrer
